The Martha’s Vineyard diet detox program is based on the New York Times bestselling diet book that promises amazing weight loss in a very short period of time.  The book sells itself on its “21 pounds in 21 days” assurance for those who stick with the plan.  Developed by Roni DeLuz, a licensed naturopathic health practitioner at the Martha’s Vineyard Holistic Retreat, located at the famous Martha’s Vineyard Inn.

The idea behind the Martha’s Vineyard detox diet is that everything around us contains harmful toxins—the food we eat, the air we breathe, that daily cup of coffee or that after work cocktail.  These toxins make their way into our bodies and accumulate there, and the only way to get rid of them and improve overall health is through body detox and regular exercise.

The Martha’s Vineyard diet detox claims to be different from other detox cleanses in that there is no fasting or starvation required.  Participants can consume a variety of foods in liquid form throughout the day, which maintains blood sugar levels and regulates metabolism.

Most allowable foods must be cooked and blended into nutritious drinks.  These include decaffeinated herbal teas, berry juices, purified water, fresh vegetable juices, pureed vegetable soups or broths, summer squash, beans, sweet potatoes, garlic, red cabbage, collard greens, tomatoes, carrots and beets.

A significant disadvantage of the Martha’s Vineyard plan is that it is quite restrictive; for three full weeks participants are not allowed any other foods aside from those recommended by the program.  Alcohol and caffeine consumption are strictly prohibited, too.  During the 21 day detox diet period, caloric intake is set around 1000 calories per day.

Followers of this particular detox diet are also required to purchase specially designed nutritional supplements like aloe vera juice, enzymes and vitamins that are meant to aid digestion.  Despite these costs, the plan is generally affordable when compared to other colon detox programs.  The Martha’s Vineyard detox diet costs about $12 per day, which is a fairly good bargain.

After the initial three week detox period is over, the diet allows slow and gradual introduction of foods like yogurt, protein powders, salmon and soy milk.  Once those have been added into a participant’s regular diet, other nutritious foods can be incorporated gradually.

Of all the body detox programs currently flooding the market, the Martha’s Vineyard diet seems to offer a good balance.  While the plan is very restrictive and must be followed to the letter to produce desired results, there is no fasting or starvation to increase the risk of negative side effects.  The focus with this particular detox diet seems to be on shocking the body into lifestyle change that is then gradually relaxed to make room for variety and some flexibility.

In addition to the guarantee of rapid weight loss, other reported benefits of the Martha’s Vineyard body detox include increased energy levels, better blood glucose levels, increased metabolism, stabilization of vitality, and improved overall health.
