Liver Detoxification

The liver is perhaps the single most important organ in the body when it comes to body detox.  Responsible for the vast majority of the body’s natural detoxification processes, the liver can easily become overwhelmed and overworked by many factors including environmental toxins like pollen and smog, chemicals in food additives, pesticides, genetically altered foods, overindulgence in rich or fatty foods, and excess alcohol consumption.  When the liver becomes overstressed toxins can accumulate in the body and become trapped; this can cause various health problems including sluggishness and fatigue.  Liver malfunction can also make weight loss difficult.  For many, liver detox is a practical solution.

There are several different liver detox methods, each with distinct benefits and risks.

The popular coffee enema is as it sounds—coffee is introduced directly into the colon through the rectum.  Because caffeine is a natural dilator, the enema helps open the bile duct pathway between the liver and the colon.  This makes it easier for the liver to transfer waste into the digestive system where it is then flushed from the body.  Evidence to support the effectiveness of this method is mostly anecdotal and, for some, the idea of using coffee in such a way is extremely unattractive.

Certain natural herbal supplements and vitamin regimens have also been shown to have a positive effect on liver function.  Vitamins C and E, beta-carotene, zinc, selenium, milk thistle, dandelion root, and all of the B-vitamins can be used alone or in combination to protect the liver cells while the organ works to remove toxins naturally.

Liver flush is a somewhat controversial body detox method that involves ingesting a concoction of olive oil, grapefruit or lemon juice, edible Epsom salts and purified water.  In combination with fasting, liver flush can work in just a few days to rid the body of toxins.  However, this is a fasting detox and can cause headaches, nausea and other minor complications.

There are various commercially prepared products, supplements and liver detox regimens that claim to aid in liver function and increase detoxification.  While many of these over the counter remedies contain herbs and vitamins that have shown some promise in detox cleansing, without FDA regulation or approval it is difficult to accurately judge their safety and effectiveness.

Some liver detox methods can also interfere with certain prescription medications.  It’s a good idea to check with your doctor or health care provider before beginning a detox program.  If you need more information on how to detox, research the various methods carefully and look for credible customer testimonials to help you decide if a regimen is worth the cost.

For a more natural liver detox, simple lifestyle changes can produce significant results.  Increase your daily intake of water; reduce alcohol consumption; eliminate or limit exposure to tobacco smoke; cut back on fried foods, animal fats, sugar and caffeine; eat more whole grains, fresh fruits and vegetables; and increase your daily activity level or strive to boost your established exercise routine.
