Marijuana Detox Methods

Medication

Most detox centers provide a patient with medication to curb withdrawal symptoms. Marijuana’s symptoms are low, but there are still some trials being conducted in an attempt to find a medication for marijuana detox. The medication THC was found to help suppress many marijuana withdrawal symptoms at a moderate, oral dosage and that a higher dosage… almost completely abolished withdrawal symptoms. Other medications have been used, such as Nefazodone, but have not been found to decrease the same amount of withdrawal symptoms.

THC is the medication that is most often used during marijuana detox and to treat patients in hospitals who are experiencing marijuana withdrawal. Marijuana addiction has been found to give users a similar experience to addiction to tobacco, so if you choose to detox from marijuana, you will most likely be given some kind of medication to help curb your symptoms of withdrawal.

Therapy

Marijuana Detox

The combination of medication and therapy will help you avoid marijuana relapse.

Therapy is incredibly beneficial to those going through drug detox. It keeps them in detox longer and builds a solid foundation to continue therapy after detox ends in order to strengthen the chance for true recovery. The NIDA states that “medically assisted detoxification is only first stage of addiction treatment and by itself does little to change long-term drug abuse.” This is why many detox programs have patients attend therapy sessions while going through detox.

You will likely have access to different types of therapy. Some of the main types you might encounter are:

Behavioral Therapy (or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)

This type of therapy teaches patients to rethink their addictions and change their perceptions of them. It helps “patients recognize, avoid, and cope with the situations in which they are most likely to abuse drugs” (NIDA). This type of therapy is often very beneficial to marijuana users. Helping a person understand how marijuana has negatively affected his or her life and guiding that person in the ability to make smarter choices after detox and rehab is the best way to prevent relapse in the future.

Group Therapy

Group therapy sessions are normally run by a professional and allow for candid conversation between different patients about their addictions. They are able to share their feelings with a group who understands them. This can also be highly beneficial to marijuana users.

Mutual-Help Groups or MHGs

MHGs are often set up in detox clinics and community outreach centers, though they could be found anywhere. These groups are sometimes necessary to someone who is struggling with addiction after rehab, as they are less structured groups who meet to discuss their addictions. Many detox centers may help a patient get involved with an MHG as a way of continuing treatment afterward.

Marijuana detox is important for someone who has felt the world slipping away under his or her addiction. When you allow your desire and cravings for marijuana to control your life, you are likely already addicted and ought to consider detox. Medical professionals will help you through the difficult process of getting clean and beginning your recovery toward a new life.
