About VA Medical Center/Michael E DeBakey Substance Dependence Treatment Program
The Michael E. DeBakey Department of Veterans Affair Medical Center offers alcohol and drug rehab services in Houston, Texas. The center provides residential, medical detox, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), inpatient (IP), outpatient (OP), and aftercare services for veterans and their families. Specialized services are available for homeless/indigent persons, the LGBTQ+ community, and underserved communities.
At the Substance Dependence Treatment Program, clients have a structured environment to begin their sobriety. Licensed clinicians administer FDA-approved prescriptions, including methadone, buprenorphine/naloxone, Naltrexone, acamprosate, disulfiram, topiramate, bupropion, and varenicline to reduce cravings and ease withdrawal pains. Detox also includes counseling services to reinforce recovery.
After detox, clients continue to participate in individual and group therapy, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), motivational interviews, and motivational enhancement therapy to address co-occurring mental and behavioral health disorders. Clients may be referred to other departments in the medical center for nutritional guidelines or faith-based healing, or to outside facilities for specialized substance abuse programs.
