Emergency Detox Treatment Access Increases With MAT Reforms
Published: 03/31/2026

Emergency departments are on the frontlines of the opioid crisis, but implicit biases can lead to uneven care during opioid detox and treatment across different ethnic groups, genders and economic backgrounds.
When it comes to pain management and medication-assisted treatment (MAT), emergency departments have taken steps to improve equitable access to detox and treatment for all.
To address these issues, healthcare providers have moved forward in three areas. Expanding access to MAT, building partnerships and addressing disparities.
Removing Barriers to MAT for Opioid Detox
The federal X waiver was a DEA mandate that put restrictions on MAT prescriptions. For those going through opioid detox, MAT plays a crucial role in reducing withdrawal symptoms and lowering relapse risk.
In 2023, Congress repealed this waiver to broaden access to medication-assisted treatment. The hope is that continued policy changes further widen access to medication for opioid use disorder.
As of 2021, less than 1 in 4 of the 2.5 million people in the U.S. with opioid use disorders received medication for it.
While there are many reasons for the low numbers, allowing greater access to medications can help improve that statistic, which means more lives saved.
AI Partnerships To Increase Opioid Withdrawal Treatment
To tap into additional resources and partnerships, emergency departments are looking to large language models (LLMs) for assistance with pain management decision-making during opioid withdrawal.
The goal is to provide to effective relief while limiting the risk of addiction. Disparities in pain management treatment based on factors like race and gender can sometimes delay critical care.
Using AI to focus on making decisions based on clinical need may accelerate treatment access.
However, one study showed that if the data fed into LLMs are already corrupted by bias, their output models may perpetuate that bias. Healthcare providers will need to caution of this when making clinical decisions.
Exploring Withdrawal Management Options
MAT is a major step forward in managing opioid detox and withdrawal safely. Find out more about accessing this treatment by searching detox.com’s directory of detox centers or calling 800-996-6135 today.
