A new medical detox center is preparing to open on the South Coast of Massachusetts, adding inpatient beds for people who need a safe, supervised place to begin recovery.

Gosnold Behavioral Health will open its 96-bed facility in Wareham on July 1, moving its program from Falmouth into a renovated building on Indian Neck Road.

Why Medical Detox Matters

Detox is the body’s process of clearing drugs or alcohol, and for some substances it can be dangerous without medical help.

Withdrawal from alcohol or benzodiazepines can cause seizures and a life-threatening condition called delirium tremens, and opioid withdrawal can be severe enough to derail recovery. ‘Medical detox means a clinical team monitors symptoms around the clock and uses medication to keep the process safe.

Gosnold’s program reflects that standard. Its Addiction Treatment Services is a five to ten day detoxification program in which patients are stabilized and work with a medical team to stop using the substance involved.

What Gosnold’s Program Offers

The nonprofit, founded in 1972, treats mental health, substance use, and co-occurring illness across eastern Massachusetts.

The Wareham site offers two levels of inpatient care: the short detox program and Crisis Stabilization Services, which averages 19 to 28 days and serves as the rehabilitation phase.

Chief Clinical Officer Allie Anderson called the new site a “significant upgrade” over the Falmouth location.

It includes private bathrooms, recreation spaces, a full cafeteria, a fitness facility and enclosed courtyards. Patients remain on site throughout treatment rather than leaving on passes.

How Detox Fits Into Recovery

Medical detox is the first step, not the whole journey. Once a person is stabilized, ongoing care, whether inpatient, outpatient or medication-assisted treatment (MAT), helps protect against relapse during the vulnerable weeks that follow.

MAT uses medicines such as buprenorphine or naltrexone alongside counseling and is often started during or after detox.

Finding Medical Detox in Massachusetts

The new center responds to local need. In 2024, Wareham recorded 30 substance-related deaths, 11 of them opioid-related, according to the state Bureau of Substance Addiction Services. Gosnold has said it will give Wareham residents priority if a waiting list forms.
