Missoula Adds Medical Detox as Montana Addiction Crisis Grows
Published: 06/10/2026

A Missoula hospital is launching a new medical detox program this July, offering the first widely accessible, insurance-covered inpatient withdrawal management service in western Montana, a development that could transform how the state’s growing addiction crisis is addressed.
Community Medical Center announced the program in response to what hospital CEO Greg Cook calls an urgent substance use crisis in the state.
According to the Montana Substance Use Disorders Task Force, roughly 79,000 Montanans are currently struggling with addiction, with alcohol identified as the most common substance of concern.
For the many Montanans who have been waiting for help closer to home, this new program represents a critical step toward safer withdrawal management and a real pathway into recovery.
Why Medical Detox Matters for Alcohol and Opioid Withdrawal
Alcohol withdrawal is among the most physically dangerous of all withdrawal syndromes, a fact that makes medically supervised detox not just preferable, but often life-saving.
For people with a history of heavy alcohol use, stopping abruptly can cause seizures, severe vomiting, tremors, hallucinations and in some cases death.
The physical severity of withdrawal also drives relapse, as many people are unable to complete the process without medical management.
This is why medical detox, inpatient withdrawal management with 24-hour nursing and physician oversight, protocol-specific medications, and structured monitoring, is the standard of care for alcohol dependence.
Attempting to detox from alcohol or benzodiazepines at home without medical supervision is dangerous and is never recommended.
Opioid withdrawal, while rarely fatal on its own, is intensely uncomfortable and carries serious risks of relapse and overdose.
Medications like buprenorphine (Suboxone) and methadone, the cornerstones of medication-assisted treatment (MAT), are most effective when initiated in a medically supervised setting.
A New Program Built Around Continuity of Care
Community Medical Center’s program, launching July 6 under the name StepOne Service, will provide a three- to five-day inpatient withdrawal management program.
Patients will receive around-the-clock monitoring and protocol-specific medications to reduce the severity of withdrawal symptoms, and will be able to self-refer by phone through a screening process.
Critically, the program is designed with what comes next firmly in mind. A service coordinator will work with each patient to develop a discharge plan with referrals to the next level of care before admission, to prevent a pattern of detoxing and relapsing without follow-through treatment.
The hospital will partner with Evergreen Healthcare Partners to deliver the program. According to the hospital’s director of marketing and community relations, Megan Condra, Evergreen reports an 80% rate of patients completing detox and continuing on to further treatment.
Cook said the clinical team will approach substance use disorder as a chronic medical condition, the same way they treat diabetes or heart disease, with designated nurses and physicians overseeing each patient’s care.
Access and Insurance Coverage Filling a Critical Gap
One of the most significant aspects of this program is its accessibility. The only other inpatient detox options currently available in western Montana operate on a private-pay basis, meaning they do not accept Medicare or Medicaid.
Community Medical Center’s program will accept most insurance plans the hospital currently contracts with, and payment plans will be available.
Cook noted that the nearest Medicaid- and Medicare-accepting program is located in Billings, while another option is roughly three hours away in Spokane, Washington, a difficult journey for patients in western Montana seeking immediate help.
