A new medication unit in Red Bluff, California is putting medication-assisted treatment within reach for people who previously had to travel out of Tehama County to start opioid treatment.

Why Medical Detox and MOUD Access Matters Here

Aegis Treatment Centers, part of the Pinnacle Treatment Centers family of companies, opened the Red Bluff site as a sister clinic to its full Opioid Treatment Program (OTP) in Chico. For people managing opioid withdrawal, distance to a dosing site can be the difference between starting treatment and putting it off.

The Aegis model is built to remove exactly that barrier, along with transportation, long wait times and cost, which the company names as the main reasons people delay getting help.

Opioid withdrawal is not typically life threatening the way severe alcohol or benzodiazepine withdrawal can be, but it is intensely uncomfortable, and untreated cravings during this period are a major driver of relapse and overdose risk. Medically supervised access to medication that manages withdrawal and cravings is the safest way through it.

What the Red Bluff Medication Unit Offers

The new unit provides medications for opioid use disorder, including methadone and buprenorphine, along with ongoing care coordination.

Each patient works with licensed clinical staff to build a treatment plan suited to their needs, and that support continues throughout recovery rather than stopping once withdrawal symptoms ease.

The site is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. and is located at 10 Gilmore Rd in Red Bluff. Most insurance plans are accepted, including Medi-Cal.

Understanding Methadone and Buprenorphine

Methadone and buprenorphine are both FDA approved medications used to treat opioid use disorder, and both work by acting on the same brain receptors as opioids like heroin or fentanyl, but in a way that reduces cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing the same intense high.

Methadone is dispensed daily at a certified opioid treatment program in most cases, which is why a nearby dosing site matters so much for people who cannot easily travel.

Buprenorphine, often known by the brand name Suboxone, can sometimes be prescribed for take home use once a patient is stabilized, giving providers flexibility depending on a patient’s needs and history.

Neither medication is a quick fix. Both are typically paired with addiction therapy and ongoing monitoring, which is part of why the Red Bluff unit emphasizes care coordination alongside dosing.

Opioid withdrawal should always be managed with medical supervision. Stopping opioids abruptly without support increases the risk of relapse, and relapsing after a period of reduced tolerance is one of the leading causes of fatal overdose.

Anyone considering stopping opioid use should talk to a medical provider about medication-assisted treatment rather than attempting to detox alone.
