Salem Medical Detox Center Expands Addiction Treatment Statewide

“There’s nothing worse than when an individual is ready to make those changes and there’s nowhere to go and nowhere to provide the care,” he said.

What the New Salem Detox Center Offers

The expanded facility will bring Salem its first-ever sobering center alongside a larger medical detox program, both located at Bridgeway’s downtown campus on Northeast Front Street.

The new detox wing will have capacity for 34 patients, up from the current 24, with the goal of ensuring no one is turned away while experiencing withdrawal.

The sobering center will feature recliner chairs for up to six individuals in a main room, along with two private rooms for those who need quieter recovery time.

Medical staff and nurses will observe patients throughout the process which typically takes six to eight hours.

The building spans roughly 22,000 square feet and includes separate wings for sobering and detox services, along with a commercial kitchen, living spaces and private rooms.

Funding came in part through Oregon’s Measure 110 and state grants. A ribbon cutting for the new center is planned for June.

From Sobering to Detox Programs Near Salem

The design of the facility is intentional: placing sobering and medical detox services under the same roof creates a direct pathway from acute intoxication into supervised withdrawal treatment.

Bridgeway’s leadership has hoped that locating these services together will help persuade people who use sobering services to enroll in detox and longer-term treatment.

Following detox, which typically lasts four to seven days under medical observation, patients receive treatment for withdrawal from alcohol, fentanyl, heroin, methamphetamine and prescription opioids. Staff work to connect individuals to residential or outpatient programs upon discharge.

This continuum of care reflects what addiction medicine specialists consider best practice, which is a warm handoff from detox into ongoing treatment, rather than discharge into an environment that may trigger relapse.
