Sioux Falls holds the largest concentration of treatment options in South Dakota, covering the full continuum from hospital-based medical detox through residential programs, intensive outpatient and dedicated opioid treatment programs. This is especially important because methamphetamine is the most commonly involved substance in drug offenses statewide, while fentanyl drives most fatal overdoses.
The city’s most notable recent addition is The Link, a 24/7 low-barrier stabilization center at 132 North Dakota Avenue, operated by Avera Health in partnership with the City of Sioux Falls and Minnehaha County. Importantly, The Link provides immediate triage for people experiencing acute intoxication, withdrawal symptoms or mental health crises, without requiring an appointment or insurance.
Moreover, opioid settlement funds are reshaping the local treatment capacity. For example, in April 2026, South Dakota announced $7.8 million in grants, including $3 million to Avera Behavioral Health for adolescent addiction services and $1 million to the Sioux Falls School District for substance use interventionists in schools.
South Dakota’s Division of Behavioral Health (DBH), a division of the Department of Social Services, licenses and accredits all substance use disorder treatment facilities in the state. In fact, DBH accreditation is required for Medicaid enrollment and state grant eligibility, so any accredited program has met standardized clinical and safety standards.
As well, the South Dakota Board of Addiction and Prevention Professionals (BAPP), also within DSS, separately licenses the individual addiction counselors who deliver care at those facilities.
