About EPOCH Counseling Center East – Closed
EPOCH Counseling Center East operated under the Friends Research Institute and was established in 1971. The center was in Essex, Maryland, and focused on outpatient substance use disorder counseling for adolescents and adults. The center also provided a practical application for drug misuse research.
The facility was located in the Stem-Ross Professional Center, and the clinicians provided medication assisted treatment (MAT) for detox and maintenance in addition to the addiction counseling services. The organization accepted private health insurance and Medicaid.
Although the organization treated clients for nearly 50 years at this location, please note that this facility is now permanently closed. Operations were transferred to Maryland Treatment Centers in 2018.
Specializing in Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT)
The clinicians specialized in MAT for clients with addiction to reduce cravings and prevent relapse. They treated older adolescents and adults in the greater metro area of Baltimore. Mental health treatment centered on trauma related counseling services using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
Combining Addiction Treatment and Clinical Research
One unique differentiator of EPOCH was its connection to the Friends Research Institute. The facility had a broader mission to combine grants administration and clinical research to advance the field of addiction treatment.

-
Dual Diagnosis
Dual diagnosis programs address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously. This integrated approach to care improves the likelihood of long term recovery and stability by addressing the root causes of addiction.
Detox Service Setting
-
Outpatient Detox
Outpatient detox gives you access to medically supervised withdrawal services while still allowing you to live at home. You’ll attend a clinic for treatment and monitoring. This flexible option is suitable for those with mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms who have strong support systems.
-
MAT
Medication assisted treatment combines medication and counseling to manage withdrawal and reduce cravings for opioid and alcohol addiction. Medications may include methadone, buprenorphine or naltrexone. MAT is tailored to your needs so you can actively participate in your treatment journey.
