About IAFF Center of Excellence
The IAFF Center of Excellence in Upper Marlboro, Maryland is a specialized behavioral health and addiction treatment center created exclusively for members of the International Association of Fire Fighters.
The center offers a full continuum of care, including detoxification, residential treatment, intensive outpatient services and aftercare planning.
Built by fire fighters for fire fighters, the program delivers evidence based, trauma informed care in a peer supported environment designed to address substance use disorders, PTSD, depression, anxiety and other behavioral health challenges unique to first responders.
Medically Monitored Detoxification
Treatment begins with a comprehensive screening and assessment, followed by medically monitored detoxification when appropriate then transitions into residential inpatient care.
Within the first 24 hours, each member meets with a primary physician and therapist to establish an individualized treatment plan tailored to their specific substance use and mental health needs.
Programming includes individual and group therapy, family sessions and evidence based modalities such as CBT, CPT, EMDR and 12 step recovery.
The center integrates trauma therapies alongside addiction treatment to address PTSD and job related stress common among fire service personnel. Aftercare planning includes referrals to outpatient or intensive outpatient programs, medication management, peer support meetings and alumni mentoring to sustain long term recovery.

-
Outpatient
In outpatient therapy, you’ll attend therapy sessions several times each week while living at home. This is ideal if you have a strong support system and a lower risk of relapse. Outpatient treatment offers flexibility to maintain work, school or family obligations.
-
Dual Diagnosis
Dual diagnosis programs address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously. This integrated approach to care improves the likelihood of long term recovery and stability by addressing the root causes of addiction.
-
PHP
Partial hospitalization programs provide comprehensive treatment in a structured setting during the day but allow you to return home at night. These programs offer a balance of inpatient and outpatient rehab and provide intensive support without full time residency.
-
Aftercare
Aftercare programs provide ongoing support after you complete a rehab program. They may include several components to help you maintain sobriety including therapy, community support groups and relapse prevention strategies. This gives you a network of resources as you reintegrate into your daily life.
