Shoemaker Center
About Shoemaker Center
The Shoemaker Center is a residential treatment facility for substance use disorder operated by Maryland Treatment Centers since 2008. Surrounded by serene green spaces and near calming waterways in Sykesville, Maryland, the Shoemaker Center provides the perfect environment for detoxing from substances and the early stages of recovery. They offer treatment to adults aged 21 and older. They accept most major insurances and Maryland Medicaid. I really appreciate that they offer a sliding fee scale for uninsured clients.
High-Intensity, Short-Term Rehab
Clients often avoid entering treatment for substance use disorder as they fear going through the painful withdrawal process. The high-intensity, short-term rehab program at the Shoemaker Center helps clients detox from substances as comfortably and safely as possible. Clients are prescribed medications that dampen cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms so they can wean off substances to kick-start their recovery.
As clients are undergoing detoxification, they also receive individual therapy and group therapy, which focuses on supporting clients during their stay and teaching skills vital for the early stages of recovery. A stay in the Shoemaker Center typically lasts between 21 and 28 days.

Having struggled with her mental health, Gemma has spent much of her writing career focused on topics surrounding behavioral health and stigmatized health issues, such as eating disorders, depression, obesity, and sexually transmitted diseases. It was a natural step to write about addiction, with her background in Biology and Research Science playing a key role in understanding chemical dependency as a disease. By writing about drug rehabilitation in an accessible and compassionate way, she hopes more people will feel encouraged to seek help.
