About The Beacon
The Beacon is a low barrier emergency shelter in Des Moines providing recovery focused programming for adults experiencing homelessness and substance use challenges. The facility offers Safe Recovery services that include withdrawal management and intensive outpatient treatment, recovery coaching and peer support for individuals actively using substances or in recovery. The Beacon meets guests where they are with a trauma informed, harm reduction approach designed to reduce harm, stabilize lives and connect people to housing and treatment when they are ready.
Harm Reduction Support
The Beacon’s Safe Recovery programming provides structured, shelter based support for guests working through substance use and addiction. Services include recovery coaching, group sessions and intensive case management that help guests reduce harm and build stability while accessing a safe place to stay.
Using a harm reduction model, the team supports individuals at every stage of their recovery journey without requiring abstinence as a precondition for services. Withdrawal Management
The Beacon offers withdrawal management services and intensive outpatient treatment onsite making it one of the few low barrier shelters in Iowa to provide integrated recovery care. Guests can access medical and psychiatric connections, peer support and coordinated referrals for ongoing substance use and mental health treatment in the community.

The Beacon is located at 1717 Woodland Avenue in downtown Des Moines and operates 24/7 as an in person emergency shelter with onsite recovery programming. The facility serves adults experiencing homelessness with a housing focused model designed to move guests from crisis to stability.

Levels of Care

Inpatient
Inpatient and residential programs provide round-the-clock medical and emotional support as you live at the treatment facility. This level of care may be recommended if you have severe addictions or mental health conditions since it removes outside distractions and allows you to focus solely on therapy.
