A new medical detox facility is now open in downtown Lynchburg, Virginia, expanding access to supervised withdrawal management for people struggling with substance addiction in a region where treatment gaps have persisted for years.

Roads to Recovery cut the ribbon May 19 on its new withdrawal management program at 1001 Fifth St., adding eight inpatient beds to Central Virginia’s recovery landscape.

Why Medical Detox Matters for Safe Withdrawal

Withdrawal from alcohol, opioids, and benzodiazepines is not simply uncomfortable, it can be life-threatening.

Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal in particular can trigger seizures, severe autonomic instability, and delirium tremens, a condition that can be fatal without prompt clinical intervention.

Opioid withdrawal, while rarely fatal on its own, poses serious risks of dehydration, relapse, and overdose if left unmanaged.

Medical detox, supervised withdrawal in a staffed clinical setting, allows providers to monitor vital signs, administer medications to reduce withdrawal severity and intervene quickly if complications arise.

Without that layer of oversight, individuals attempting to stop alcohol or benzodiazepines on their own face significant and unnecessary danger. Never attempt alcohol or benzodiazepine detox without medical supervision.

Roads to Recovery Expands Detox Centers in Lynchburg

Roads to Recovery’s new facility is located at 1001 Fifth St. in downtown Lynchburg and includes eight inpatient beds providing individualized detox services designed to remove patients from environments and triggers that may contribute to substance use.

The program is fully staffed around the clock, with staff members who have personal experience in recovery, according to withdrawal management program manager Eric Robertson.

The facility’s design choices reflect an intentional therapeutic philosophy. Robertson described the space as featuring low lighting, comfortable rooms, and a home-like atmosphere intended to help patients feel at ease during treatment, emphasizing that patients are “seen” and “heard,” not just processed through a system.

That kind of environment matters during detox. Acute withdrawal is a period of significant physiological and psychological stress.

Reducing environmental stressors, offering consistent human support, and providing a calm physical space are all components of trauma-informed care, an approach increasingly recognized as essential in addiction medicine.

Understanding Withdrawal Management Programs

Withdrawal management (the clinical term for what is commonly called “detox”) encompasses medical assessment, monitoring and treatment of the physical symptoms that occur when the body adjusts to the absence of a substance it has become dependent on.

At facilities like Roads to Recovery’s new center, this typically involves nursing and clinical oversight around the clock, the potential use of FDA-approved medications to ease withdrawal symptoms, and a structured transition plan toward ongoing treatment.

For opioid use disorder, medications such as buprenorphine (often known by the brand name Suboxone) may be initiated during detox, a key component of medication-assisted treatment (MAT) that significantly reduces the risk of relapse and overdose after discharge.

Addressing the Detox Gap in Central Virginia

The facility has been in development for years and received a $100,000 grant from the Greater Lynchburg Community Foundation’s Century Fund in 2024.

Robertson acknowledged that the new beds represent a start, not a solution, to the region’s treatment capacity challenges.

He said the opportunity to serve people in early recovery is deeply meaningful, noting how resilient patients are once they move through withdrawal and begin to see what’s possible.

Roads to Recovery also operates center-based and residential treatment programs at its Langhorne Rd. location, and the organization noted that funding remains critical to sustaining and expanding its mission as substance use disorders affect communities across the board.

Finding Medical Detox in Virginia

For individuals and families in Central Virginia, the opening of this facility represents a meaningful new option, but demand for medically supervised detox programs across the state continues to outpace supply.

If you or someone you love is dependent on alcohol, opioids or benzodiazepines, do not attempt to stop without speaking to a medical provider first.

Supervised withdrawal in a medical detox center is the safest and most effective way to begin recovery.
