Ben Westoff, a St. Louis journalist, produced a new documentary on naltrexone’s role in combating addiction. Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) programs sometimes use naltrexone to block the effects of opioids and alcohol.

The drug reduces cravings and prevents the “high” associated with substance use, helping people break free from addiction. Although it’s FDA-approved and highly effective, clinicians still don’t use naltrexone as widely as methadone.

One of the most common medications prescribed in MAT. In his documentary “Antagonist,” Westoff identified the culprit behind naltrexone’s lack of exposure: Big Pharma.

Naltrexone vs Methadone in Addiction Treatment

Methadone is a long-acting synthetic opioid that, when used at the correct dose, reduces cravings and blocks the effects of opioids.

Rehabs often use methadone during medical detox, but the drug’s addictive nature means that clients must taper off methadone carefully to prevent side effects.

Many people remain on methadone for years. Its daily dosages often lead to long lines outside addiction treatment centers every morning to make sure they don’t miss their dose.

Naltrexone, on the other hand, doesn’t contain any opioids, so there’s no risk of addiction. Folks taking naltrexone only require monthly dosing.

Its very nature challenges the idea that someone experiencing addiction will have a chronic condition for the rest of their life.

The Halt on Widespread Naltrexone Adoption

Here’s where Westoff steps in. He claims to have uncovered why Big Pharma is uninterested in the widespread adoption of naltrexone to treat addictions. To put it simply, naltrexone has much less potential for profit.

Since methadone detox requires more frequent dosing and is itself addictive, companies who manufacture it can potentially cultivate lifelong clientele.

Naltrexone’s effectiveness threatens that. According to “Antagonist,” Big Pharma’s pursuit for profits gets in the way of naltrexone’s widespread use.

Viewers can watch the documentary online on the film’s Patreon account. The documentary follows Percy Menzies, who has decades of experience advocating for the use of naltrexone.

He runs a local St. Louis clinic, Assisted Recovery Centers of America, that has successfully helped thousands overcome addiction through naltrexone. Their hope is to give folks in recovery the power of choice in their journey.

Finding Detox Treatment

“Antagonist” speaks to the need for Missourians and their families to get assistance with the first steps of weaning off dependency.
