Ohio Funds Jail Detox and Addiction Treatment Programs
Published: 02/5/2026

State Attorney General Dave Yost recently announced a fourth round of grants to support addiction treatment for inmates across Ohio. They’re meant to improve recovery access for justice-involved people across the state.
They’ll help facilities improve local efforts to address substance use disorders, including safer withdrawal management and reentry into the community.
Addressing Substance Use and Detox Needs in Ohio Jails
Yost emphasized that the grants are not solely intended to prevent overdoses during incarceration. They’ll also provide incarcerated individuals with resources to break the cycle of substance abuse and imprisonment.
Union County’s West Central Community Correctional Facility alone will get $200K in grant funding to support their recovery programs. The funds will support people in jail diversion programs, those who are incarcerated and individuals on supervised release.
Yost praised county sheriffs and local leaders for utilizing the funds to improve addiction treatment and detox services across Columbus and throughout the state.
The office gave grants to 17 county jails in the last three months of 2025. Now 49 jails and some 54 Ohio counties get funding for inmate recovery programs.
The ultimate goal isn’t just to keep inmates in recovery from reoffending. They also want to keep community members, especially Ohio’s young people, from ever falling into the cycle of substance abuse and imprisonment.
Recovery Focused Alternatives to Incarceration in Ohio
The program also includes community-based correctional facilities which provide residential alternatives for nonviolent offenders dealing with addiction.
Over $10 million has been awarded since the program’s last round of grants in March. Yost’s office plans to distribute up to $60 million in opioid settlement funds over several years.
Overdose is a major cause of death among jail inmates in Ohio. This underscores the need for medically supervised detox and withdrawal care.
Opioid Remediation Grant Program
The Opioid Remediation Grant Program allows county jails and community based correctional facilities to receive up to $200K annually.
The funds may be used to keep an addiction services coordinator on staff. They may also be used to contract with providers offering detox and recovery support.
Counties operating jails can apply for grants to purchase medications for inmates withdrawing from opioids, helping ensure a safer, medically supported detox process. The funds will also help provide structured and longer term addiction support for inmates while they’re incarcerated and after they’re released.
