About Sentara Behavioral Health — Newport News

Chessen and Associates was a private psychiatric and behavioral medicine private practice in Newport News, Virginia. They were established in 1979 and have since closed when Dr. Chessen retired and the center merged with Sentara Behavioral Health. The original care team included a psychiatrist, a physician assistant, a psychiatric nurse practitioner and several psychotherapists.

Care Across the Lifespan

When open, Chessen provided psychiatric services to children, seniors, couples and families. They specialized in medication management, especially for those in substance abuse treatment. They offered an intensive outpatient program (IOP) that could address drug addictions, eating disorders, stress and other mental health conditions.

They also offered gender specific treatment for women’s issues and couples therapy for marital and family conflict. These additional services ensured you received whole person care to address the concerns that are typically associated with substance use disorders.

Partnering with You to Rebuild Your Life

Your program began with a thorough evaluation that formed the foundation of a customized treatment program. This included outpatient medication assisted treatment via buprenorphine if needed.

In addition to offering treatment for mental health conditions and substance use disorders, one of the psychotherapists also had many years of experience working with the Department of Defense, doing assessments and management coaching. This may have offered additional insight into treatment for active-duty military and veterans.
