About Elk River Treatment Program – Closed

Elk River Treatment Program in Huntsville, Alabama, offered several programs for teens, including substance use disorder treatment, nutrition, academic support, and a healthy lifestyles program that supported teen weight loss. They have since closed.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Began with Detoxification

The dual diagnosis program addressed mental health conditions and substance use disorders concurrently. The first step in their program began with detoxification, including medical monitoring and medication assisted treatment. Their detoxification program removed you from the environment where you normally had access to drugs and alcohol, which helped to reduce the relapse rate.

You also had access to FDA approved, prescribed medications to alleviate withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Medical supervision and monitoring helped detect severe or life-threatening symptoms and reduce complications. Alongside detox, you also received psychotherapy or talk therapy and psychoeducation to learn about your diagnosis and develop healthier coping strategies to live with symptoms.

Specialized Teenage Prescription Drug Misuse Treatment

The teenage prescription drug abuse treatment program specifically addressed the use of prescription drugs in teens, including sedatives, opioids, and stimulants such as Ritalin or Adderall, which are commonly used to treat attention deficit disorder.

They encourage parents to promote awareness with their teens and empower them to refuse prescription drugs that their friends may suggest sharing. They also promoted modeling good behaviors at home by not sharing medication within the family and keeping track of parental medication correctly.

The Elk River Teen Treatment Program provided indoor and outdoor activities and used a multidisciplinary team approach for teenagers who struggled with mental health conditions or substance use disorders. The program encouraged teens to work together and develop better self-confidence. They used therapy as well as physician-directed medication management, exercise, diet, and one-on-one attention.
