About Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center Princeton Clinic
Princeton in West Virginia is known as the “Heart of Mercer County.” It’s also home to Southern Highlands Community Mental Health Center’s Princeton Clinic. Established in 1968, this behavioral health center provides a full continuum of care for residents in Mercer, Wyoming and McDowell Counties. They provide addiction, mental health and intellectual and developmental disability services.
You can access inpatient detox to start recovery before transitioning to another level of care. They also offer office based medication assisted treatment (MAT) with Suboxone, Sublocade, or Vivitrol. You’ll also participate in individual and group therapy sessions to get to the root of addiction.
GROWTH Program
What stands out most to me is their GROWTH Program. This track welcomes Mercer County residents between the ages of 15 and 21 battling addiction and co-occurring challenges, like teen pregnancy, homelessness, LGBTQ or legal issues. They provide case management, counseling and recovery support to help you reach recovery.
ACCESS+ Program
Their ACCESS+ program seems beneficial. They help those recently released from prison or currently incarcerated improve essential life aspects. You can develop your life skills with resume building, budgeting skills and nutritional awareness. These services can help you smoothly reenter society.
Babies Improve in Better Situations Program
Another great feature I noticed was their Babies Improve in Better Situations program. You can access this specialized service for expectant mothers and postpartum women. Peer recovery support, medication management, OBGYN care coordination and harm reduction education are available.
START Program
Their START program also caught my eye. This track ensures child safety while helping parents access essential recovery services. They strive to increase family stability and decrease out of home placements. You’ll benefit from treatment referrals to get started on recovery and keep your family together.
Levels of Care
-
Inpatient
Inpatient and residential programs provide round-the-clock medical and emotional support as you live at the treatment facility. This level of care may be recommended if you have severe addictions or mental health conditions since it removes outside distractions and allows you to focus solely on therapy.
-
Outpatient
In outpatient therapy, you’ll attend therapy sessions several times each week while living at home. This is ideal if you have a strong support system and a lower risk of relapse. Outpatient treatment offers flexibility to maintain work, school or family obligations.
-
Aftercare
Aftercare programs provide ongoing support after you complete a rehab program. They may include several components to help you maintain sobriety including therapy, community support groups and relapse prevention strategies. This gives you a network of resources as you reintegrate into your daily life.
-
Dual Diagnosis
Dual diagnosis programs address substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions simultaneously. This integrated approach to care improves the likelihood of long term recovery and stability by addressing the root causes of addiction.

Outpatient detox gives you access to medically supervised withdrawal services while still allowing you to live at home. You’ll attend a clinic for treatment and monitoring. This flexible option is suitable for those with mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms who have strong support systems.
