About UAB Center for Beacon Recovery

If you’re out in Birmingham, Alabama, you can find the UAB Center for Beacon Recovery. They provide outpatient addiction services for adults and adolescents aged 13 to 18. This includes medication assisted treatment (MAT) for adults and school based services for youths.

The clinic accepts Medicaid and has a sliding scale for program fees if you don’t have insurance. The first assessment is free, and they don’t turn anyone away because they cannot pay.

Outpatient Services for Adult Substance Use Treatment

The intake process starts with a phone evaluation that takes one to two hours. The eval is free, and the counselor will let you know what treatment options best meet your needs. Those who don’t meet the criteria for substance use disorder might still get early intervention services.

The outpatient programs for adults include early intervention, which includes DUI classes and counseling for folks who use substances but don’t have disorders. They also offer a day treatment program for those with co-occurring disorders or who are homeless.

Another adult program is their intensive outpatient program (IOP), which has at least nine hours of treatment per week and can last up to six months. The program includes individual and group counseling, and there are specialty groups on topics like 12 Steps, trauma, grief, healthy coping, and financial fitness. There’s also a general outpatient program and targeted services for pregnant women.

Addiction Treatment for Teens in Birmingham

UAB partners with schools in the area to provide substance use counseling during school hours. For teens who need help but aren’t in the school systems they serve, UAB provides evening classes either in person or through telehealth.
