Fort Lewis Army Substance Abuse Program
About Fort Lewis Army Substance Abuse Program
The Fort Lewis Army Substance Abuse Program is designed to strengthen the effectiveness and fitness of the Army’s workforce by providing education, prevention, and treatment programs for military members with substance use disorder (SUD) and co-occurring mental health issues. The program is at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington. Although the program doesn’t mention detoxification, the staff can connect you with a detox program.
It’s important to never try detoxing yourself because it can be dangerous and even fatal, depending on your situation. The program accepts military insurance, such as TRICARE. Services are for military members, civilian corps members and family members.
Addiction Prevention and Treatment to Increase Unit Fitness
The programs at Fort Lewis focus on education and prevention. However, they offer outpatient treatment programs for clients with SUD and co-occurring mental health challenges. Outpatient programs include a partial hospitalization program (PHP) and an intensive outpatient program (IOP).
They take a trauma informed approach to counseling, which is especially relevant for military members who may have experienced trauma during deployment. You’ll participate in group counseling and individual therapy. They also have experiential therapies, such as art or music therapy.
One of the nice things about this program is its proximity to the Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. The admission price is low, and there’s a four mile walking trail that has scenic views of native wildlife and plants. This is a beautiful healing place to recharge and meditate between treatments.
Emphasis on Confidentiality
It’s hard to reach out and seek help for an addiction, especially if you’re afraid of losing your job or military rank. The program emphasizes confidentiality to encourage you to ask for help as well as to reduce the stigma associated with attending a treatment program.
Once in the program, you’ll engage in various therapeutic modalities that help you identify underlying psychological issues that contribute to your substance use. With the help of your counselor, you’ll address these issues and progress through your treatment program.
