About Tennessee Valley Healthcare System Chattanooga VA Clinic

Veterans needing help and support dealing with substance use issues can access a variety of outpatient treatment services at the Chattanooga VA Clinic in Tennessee. They offer both in-person and virtual visits and a referral isn’t required for this location, which is great. The clinic is a short walk from Standifer Gap Marsh, a stunning wildlife reserve, that offers a great place for post-appointment reflection.

Treatment Tailored to the Veteran Experience

Clients aren’t required to be clean to enter treatment at the Chattanooga VA Clinic. If a chemical dependency is preventing them from engaging in treatment, they may be referred to residential treatment for medically-monitored detoxification. With supervised medical detox, withdrawal symptoms and cravings are managed to break chemical dependency in a safe and controlled way.

For those who have already completed detox or don’t require residential treatment, Medication assisted treatment (MAT) programs are available at this VA Clinic. They are delivered in an outpatient setting, which allows clients to maintain their work and family commitments. MAT combines meds that calm cravings and withdrawal symptoms to prevent relapse

Counseling to address the psychological impact of addiction. Counseling is added to MAT and uses a trauma-informed approach. It’s great that VA Health offers management medications for alcohol, tobacco, and opioid addiction.

BSc

Having struggled with her mental health, Gemma has spent much of her writing career focused on topics surrounding behavioral health and stigmatized health issues, such as eating disorders, depression, obesity, and sexually transmitted diseases. It was a natural step to write about addiction, with her background in Biology and Research Science playing a key role in understanding chemical dependency as a disease. By writing about drug rehabilitation in an accessible and compassionate way, she hopes more people will feel encouraged to seek help.
