About Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania – Cedar Avenue

Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania Cedar Avenue is a Penn Medicine behavioral health facility in West Philadelphia providing emergency psychiatric services and inpatient mental health care, medically monitored detox and intensive outpatient programs.

The facility specializes in dual diagnosis treatment for substance use and mental health conditions including bipolar disorder, major depression, anxiety disorders and schizophrenia. As part of Penn Medicine’s comprehensive behavioral health network, the Cedar Avenue location offers integrated care that addresses both addiction and psychiatric needs with around the clock medical supervision.

Dual Diagnosis and Integrated Behavioral Health Services

The Cedar Avenue facility is a mental health hub, co-locating a 31 bed inpatient psychiatric unit with a 16 bed medically monitored detox unit. They also operate a crisis response center which opened in 2023. This integrated model eliminates wait times and ambulance transfers, allowing patients in acute crisis to transition seamlessly between levels of care in one location.

Treatment combines psychiatric stabilization, substance use counseling, and medication management with evidence based approaches including cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing, trauma related counseling and relapse prevention. Individual and group counseling sessions help patients address underlying issues driving both mental health symptoms and substance use. Family psychoeducation can help support client’s long term recovery after discharge.

Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid and Alcohol Use Disorders

The facility provides medication assisted treatment using buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone for opioid and alcohol use disorders. As a SAMHSA accredited Opioid Treatment Program, the Cedar Avenue location offers comprehensive MAT combined with counseling, recovery support services and naloxone education to reduce overdose risk.
