Bowery Residents’ Committee
About Bowery Residents’ Committee
The Bowery Residents’ Committee (BRC) is a non-profit organization that works with New York City residents experiencing homelessness, hunger or crisis. Their origins date back to the 1870s and today continue to be a leader in meeting the needs of community members.
BRC offers all services free to charge thanks to generous donors and community support. Their Lower East Side campus provides a men’s residential program, day center, outpatient substance use treatment and much more.
Inpatient Detox and Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) in NY
The BRC’s detox program is unique. Unlike many detox facilities that force people to leave once they are sober, residents can stay until they have a safe place to go to continue their recovery.
They are licensed as an outpatient treatment center as well which means that doctors can prescribe buprenorphine as part of MAT.
They partner with NYU-Lutheran to provide medical care. Most of the folks who access their services are individuals experiencing homelessness. I appreciate that staff focus on addressing all of their chronic and mental health needs that have likely been ignored. This could include diabetes, hepatitis, heart disease or mental health diagnoses.
Faith-Based Residential Program in New York City
This organization runs faith-based residential programs to help folks heal, overcome barriers and transition to successful independent living.
They are open to anyone who is struggling due to addiction, domestic violence, abusive relationships, unemployment, homelessness or other challenges.
You’ll work closely with a counselor to help you take steps to find work, secure housing, and become healthy. They also help with health insurance enrollment, benefits and other entitlement assistance, connections to recreation and community centers and more.
