About START Treatment and Recovery Centers – Teen START

Teen START helps adolescents aged 12 to 17 navigate emotional, behavioral or social challenges that impact their mental well-being. It’s a program of StartCare, a community-based behavioral health agency that has provided integrated and culturally responsive care to New Yorkers since 1969. StartCare delivers substance use recovery and mental health support that improves individuals’ well-being. It’s in New York City.

They’re a short walk west of Morningside Park and north of the Mount Morris Park Historic District. It’s also northwest of the Apollo Theater and north of Columbia University. This area is part of Harlem. Teen START offers fully remote and hybrid support to streamline access to young people throughout the NYC metro area.

Holistic Support for Long-Term Wellness

Teen START supports adolescents from diverse backgrounds including LGBTQ+ youth, those involved in legal challenges and individuals facing both mental health and substance use issues. Services include diagnostic assessments and personalized care planning. This is followed by counseling that encourages recovery, social skills building, conflict resolution, anger management and self-esteem development.

Child and adolescent psychiatrists implement medication management for teens to overcome moderate to severe mental health issues. The program highly emphasized family involvement through family sessions tailored to rebuild trust and communication with loved ones.

In addition, they offer vocational counseling to support employment, education and transition to independent living. Teens enrolled in the program can continue receiving support until they turn 24.

Medication-Supported Recovery For Opioid Addiction

Young adults facing primary opioid use challenges also benefit from StartCare’s harm reduction services including overdose prevention education and medication-assisted treatment (MAT). Their network offers buprenorphine or methadone to ease withdrawal symptoms and cravings. Participants also get testing and care navigation services for viral Hepatitis C and HIV/AIDS.

Levels of Care

  • Inpatient

Inpatient and residential programs provide round-the-clock medical and emotional support as you live at the treatment facility. This level of care may be recommended if you have severe addictions or mental health conditions since it removes outside distractions and allows you to focus solely on therapy.

  • Outpatient

In outpatient therapy, you’ll attend therapy sessions several times each week while living at home. This is ideal if you have a strong support system and a lower risk of relapse. Outpatient treatment offers flexibility to maintain work, school or family obligations.

Detox Service Setting

  • Inpatient Detox

Inpatient detox occurs in a dedicated treatment facility. You’ll live there around the clock and receive intensive medical support and supervision to help manage your withdrawal symptoms. It is suitable for individuals with moderate to severe addictions as it ensures a stable detox environment.

  • Outpatient Detox

Outpatient detox gives you access to medically supervised withdrawal services while still allowing you to live at home. You’ll attend a clinic for treatment and monitoring. This flexible option is suitable for those with mild to moderate withdrawal symptoms who have strong support systems.

Programs

  • Alcohol Detox

Alcohol detox programs offer medical support to help individuals withdraw safely from alcohol. Your care team may use medications to ease your symptoms and provide medical monitoring to address complications.

  • Drug Detox

Drug detox programs support individuals who are withdrawing from addictive substances like cocaine and heroin. Medical support helps you manage symptoms in a controlled and safe environment so you can achieve initial sobriety.
