Yonkers, New York’s fourth-largest city, sits in the southwestern corner of Westchester County directly on the border with the Bronx. That geography matters for anyone searching for detox care, as residents have access to both Westchester County’s treatment network and, depending on insurance and location, facilities across the county line in New York City.
All detox and substance use disorder programs operating in Yonkers must be certified by the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), the state agency responsible for licensing, inspecting and regulating addiction treatment at every level of care.
State-certified programs meet minimum clinical and safety standards and are authorized to bill New York Medicaid. Hospital-based detox, including services at St. John’s Riverside Hospital in Yonkers, is available for higher-acuity patients who need round-the-clock medical supervision during withdrawal.
Facilities may also carry voluntary accreditation from The Joint Commission or the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), which signals adherence to higher clinical standards beyond the state minimum.
At the county level, the Westchester County Department of Community Mental Health coordinates local SUD services and oversees the Opioid Response and Overdose Prevention Initiative (ORI), a coordinated program launched in February 2022 in response to rising overdose deaths.
The ORI unites eight county departments, the District Attorney’s Office and law enforcement to share overdose data, expand naloxone access, and improve treatment referral pathways. And in 2024, Westchester distributed more than $4.1 million in opioid settlement funds to local organizations for treatment, prevention, harm reduction and recovery services.
