About SSTAR Alcoholism/Drug Detox Program

Clients may self refer or be referred by another health care provider. The detoxification area is comprised of a 20-bed unit which is medically supervised 24-hours a day, seven days a week. SSTAR services approximately 1,500 clients per year and takes most insurances. Massachusetts residents without health insurance may qualify for free care. Persons with private insurances should check with their managed care plan to see if a referral is needed.

SSTAR has physicians, psychiatrists, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and health care professionals on staff. There is also a case manager for pregnant clients to ensure that they receive obstetrical care in a timely manner. Treatment includes: medically supervised detoxification; individual, family or group counseling; aftercare outpatient services and referral to other community programs. The goal of treatment is for the client to have a safe, comfortable, humane withdrawal, and to prepare for further treatment. This program is licensed by the State of Massachusetts to treat adults, age 18 and older, with substance abuse problems. It received accreditation from the Joint Commission in 2003.

The usual length of stay is three to six days and the staff works within the constraints of the managed care systems to meet client goals in this short period of time. There is a full time utilization nurse that assesses level of care and communicates on a daily basis with insurance companies.

Treatment occurs in a multidisciplinary setting. Nurses oversee the physical aspects of the withdrawal process, administer medications as needed and refer appropriately when other health problems are identified. Counselors run educational and motivational groups for the clients as well as meet them individually to assist with arrangement of ongoing treatment. The milieu therapist assists the nurse and counselors as needed and provides for general safety and order on the unit. Pregnant clients are all seen by a case manager who assures that they receive obstetrical care in a timely manner. All clients are seen by a nurse practitioner or physician who reviews the protocols and medical issues. There is also an admissions coordinator that keeps track of clients who are seeking treatment and books their admission as soon as a bed is available.
