Flushing Hospital’s Department of Psychiatry includes an Addiction Services Division that provides comprehensive assessments and treatment of alcohol and chemical dependence through its inpatient Chemical Dependence Unit and its Reflections Outpatient Program. Both programs are licensed by the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) and are staffed by a multidisciplinary team of professionals skilled in the treatment of addiction.
The Chemical Dependence Unit is a 30-bed medically managed detoxification unit that offers safe withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs. Culturally-sensitive treatment is provided by a dedicated and caring staff that consists of physicians, physicians’ assistants, specially trained nurses, credentialed alcoholism and substance abuse counselors, creative arts therapists, clinical social workers, and psychiatric consultants.
The goal of the unit is to offer physical and emotional stabilization for our patients so they can start the recovery process. Educational groups settings help patients learn about addiction, while creative arts groups help patients understand, express and control their emotions. Also, self-help groups, such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA), hold meetings on the unit to familiarize patients with the support services they provide post-discharge.
Patients are admitted 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The length of stay is usually between three and seven days. Discharge plans are based on the individual needs of the patient.
