About AICDC Anishinabe Wakiagun

Founded in 1992, the American Indian Community Development Corporation offers culturally grounded initiatives that enrich American Indian communities across the Twin Cities metro area. Anishinabe Wakiagun is a 45-bed permanent supportive hospital for homeless American Indian natives suffering substance use challenges. This facility is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, southwest of Webber Park and the Witch’s Hat Water Tower.

Supportive Services For Healing and Growth

Anishinabe Wakiagun serves long-term homeless American Indians whose chronic alcoholism has led to multiple detox and treatment attempts without success and severe physical decline. The program is funded by Hennepin County and seeks to reduce reliance on detox and emergency services. Residents aren’t expected to achieve complete sobriety but to overcome debilitating consequences.

Referral is accepted from local care providers and community agencies. They accept self-referral as well.

The facility offers a safe environment where residents are guided by tribal staff to reconnect with their culture through resources rooted in tribal history. Each resident has a private room while sharing dining and bathroom facilities. They’re provided on- and off-site health services based on individual needs. Culturally competent programming, like the medicine wheel, helps restore balance. Residents aren’t bound by a strict treatment curriculum and can stay as long as they need. The average typically lasts 27 months.

Medically-Supervised Detoxification

Residents of Anishinabe Wakiagun whose assessment indicates the need for detox are connected to the detox center on Chicago Avenue. They undergo withdrawal under the supervision of trained clinicians who provide compassionate care and monitor their progress closely.

FDA-approved medications may be administered during this procedure to ease painful withdrawal symptoms and help ensure a safe, comfortable experience. Clients also attend in-house support groups tailored to promote peer bonding.
