South Lyon is a small city in Oakland County, about 35 miles northwest of Detroit, within one of Michigan’s most active county-level substance use disorder systems.
While South Lyon does not have a large number of detox facilities within city limits, its proximity to the broader Oakland County network and neighboring communities in Livingston and Washtenaw counties means residents have reasonable access to the full continuum of care within a 15- to 30-minute drive.
Encouragingly, Oakland County has invested heavily in opioid response infrastructure over the past several years. The county launched an Overdose Fatality Review Team, established a Health of Oakland County Dashboard, and deployed more than 100 free Narcan vending stations across its communities, including South Lyon’s surrounding area.
As well, opioid settlement funds secured by Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel have directed additional resources toward prevention, harm reduction and treatment expansion across the region.
All detox and SUD treatment facilities operating in or near South Lyon must hold a current license from the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA), specifically through its Bureau of Community and Health Systems (BCHS). Facilities that accept Medicaid must also contract through the Oakland Community Health Network (OCHN), which administers specialty behavioral health services as the regional Prepaid Inpatient Health Plan (PIHP) for Oakland County residents.
LARA licenses programs across multiple levels of detox care, including clinically managed residential withdrawal management, medically monitored residential withdrawal management and inpatient hospital-based detoxification.
Medically monitored programs are staffed with nurses and physicians and may administer controlled medications for withdrawal, including buprenorphine and benzodiazepines. In contrast, clinically managed programs offer peer and social support only, without medication administration. Understanding these distinctions is important when choosing a detox center that fits your unique medical needs.
