About SFGH.OTOP

The OTOP program of the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH) is a drug rehab in San Francisco, California. The center provides ambulatory medical detox, medication-assisted treatment (MAT), outpatient programs (OP), and aftercare for young adults and adults who reside in San Francisco. Specialized services are available for pregnant and postpartum women and veterans. A mobile van service is available.

At the OTOP facility, clients have a structured environment to manage their withdrawal pains and reduce cravings. Clinicians evaluate clients and administer FDA-approved prescriptions, including methadone and buprenorphine, to prevent relapse. Limited psychotherapy is available, but while in the facility, clients are monitored and periodically drug-screened to strengthen their recovery.

After detox, clients can transition into a long-term outpatient program. OTOP may make referrals to other SFGH departments for counseling and dual diagnosis care, or to outside treatment centers for specialized substance abuse programs.

Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission.

OTOP offers self-pay and financing options. Clients must be eligible for Medi-Cal and public health insurance payors, such as Health San Francisco and Healthy Workers. Private commercial insurance providers, such as Aetna, BlueCross/BlueShield, and Optum, are not accepted. Please check your insurance provider for potential limited coverage and out-of-network benefits.

Having struggled with her mental health, Gemma has spent much of her writing career focused on topics surrounding behavioral health and stigmatized health issues, such as eating disorders, depression, obesity, and sexually transmitted diseases. It was a natural step to write about addiction, with her background in Biology and Research Science playing a key role in understanding chemical dependency as a disease. By writing about drug rehabilitation in an accessible and compassionate way, she hopes more people will feel encouraged to seek help.
