Consumer Family Learning Center
About Consumer Family Learning Center
Consumer Family Learning Center is a peer run community resource center in Bakersfield, California, funded by Kern County Behavioral Health and Recovery Services through Mental Health Services Act funds. The center serves adults 18 years and older whose lives have been affected by mental illness and substance use, with all support provided by peers who have their own recovery experiences.
Rather than a traditional treatment plan, the center functions as a safe community space where members can learn about their conditions, build lasting friendships and explore their passions through classes, support groups and activities. When you require detox or MAT services, they can offer referrals to local resources.
Peer Led Support for Mental Health and Substance Use Recovery
The center’s core strength is its peer support model, where individuals in recovery guide and support others facing similar challenges with mental health and substance use. This approach creates authentic connections and shared understanding that complement clinical treatment.
Members participate in anonymous support groups focused on mental health and substance abuse recovery, enrichment classes that explore wellness and coping strategies and community activities including arts and crafts. The peer led environment helps reduce stigma while building practical skills and social connections that support long term recovery.
Community Based Learning and Connection
Beyond support groups, the center emphasizes community building through structured activities and social engagement. Members can participate in community trips, creative projects and classes designed to help them understand their conditions and discover new interests in a welcoming, nonclinical setting.
Services are funded through Mental Health Services Act funds, making them free or low cost to community members.
