McAlister Institute’s North County sobering center in Oceanside, California was a unique center that was open 24 hours per day seven days per week. They offered high quality, low cost services for the public regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.
Nonmedical Detox in Oceanside
The center allowed a second chance for clients who were facing incarceration for public intoxication. Intoxicated clients were kept at the center for 24 hours to give them the opportunity to regain sobriety. Clients were normally brought to the center by law enforcement or other social services organizations.
Clients received services by nurses, counseling professionals, and service navigators. After clients were sober, they received counseling and referrals to substance use treatment centers. Many of their clients were homeless and received assistance accessing housing. If a client displayed withdrawal symptoms they were referred to McAlister’s detox center.
Serving Those at High Risk and In Need
The center served a population of clients who were homeless, had co-occurring mental health disorders, and chronic substance use disorder. Services included screening, health monitoring, crisis management, and referrals for needed services.
Different meetings and groups were available. Included were women’s empowerment and job seeking classes. They offered narcotics anonymous meetings and an HIV awareness class.
Open McAlister Institute Detox Center
Although this sobering center is closed, there are several McAlister Institute locations still open. Their detox center, located in Lemon Grove, offers short term non medical residential detox. If a client needs medication assisted treatment, they will be referred to a local facility.
The detox center has a separate program for women. They boast of 100% drug free births for pregnant women who seek their help. During the two to 14 days clients are there they receive alcohol and drug education, treatment planning, 12 step information, and community referrals.
